Graphic Series
Jarrett Krosoczka gives us another episode of his Lunch Lady series in LUNCH LADY AND THE FIELD TRIP FIASCO (Knopf 2011). Lunch Lady joins the Breakfast Bunch on a field trip to an art museum. When the kids suspect that all is not right, they begin to investigate. Lunch Lady, of course, is on hand to help foil the plans of the art thieves aided by her assistant Betty. I am still flummoxed how Krosoczka is able to accomplish storytelling with few colors on the palette B&W with touches of yellow) but his characters and the details we come to know and love about each of them add depth to the story as well. <521>
Ah, A VERY BABYMOUSE CHRISTMAS by Jennifer and Matthew Holm (Random House 2011) is a perfect way to celebrate the holiday season to come (though Target and other stories think it nearer). Parodies of A NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS and A CHRISTMAS CAROL are just two of the humorous elements of the story as BabyMouse covets the newest electronic gadget for her Christmas gift. The Whizbang does it all including folding laundry and doing homework (if the ads are to be believed). What makes BabyMouse tick is that though rodent she reflects so much of the exuberant though misguided kids we all know and love. The best gift for Christmas? More BabyMouse. <522>

Graphic novels are fairly new to me, so I am not aware of Lunch Lady, but I can't help picturing Adam Sandler from Saturday Night Live and am sure he will keep popping up in my head as I read Lunch Lady. It sounds like a funny series for kids.

Looking forward to reading, A Very Babymouse Christmas. I love all the books in this series. My students enjoy reading Babymouse because of the graphic novel format. This particular title is perfect for the upcoming holiday season. I can't wait to introduce it to my students.

These are both great graphic novels. I can't wait to get them in (for myself and for the students). Mancie Beck LS5385
ReplyDeleteI will definately share A Very Babymouse Christmas with my students. My students enjoy reading the series. I haven't had the opportunity to become familiar with the Lunch Lady series but they seem fun. I'm sure the kids will enjoy them as well!

My students are too young to enjoy Babymouse, but I know I will! When I first had to read one, and saw the cover, my thought was OMG! But I actually found them quite humoruous and enjoyable. Looking forward to reading a Very Babymouse Christmas.
ReplyDeleteThe kids coming into the library all LOVE Babymouse! I'm so glad to see another. This one sounds like another that will not disappoint! :)

The amount of graphic novels I see popping up everywhere is amazing. I am with Danis about Adam Sandler on SNL... that's what that title makes me think of too. I bet everyone has interesting memories of all the lunch ladies we've had in our lives.
ReplyDeleteThe kids love Babymouse and almost all kinds of graphic novels. I am sure they will like the Christmas edition. I think the kids like it because they can connect to it. It doesn't always matter what the main character is as long as they have the same quirks and issues that the kids do.

I wish mycapstonelibrary had these books on its website. That would be so cool. The students love it when I read interesting book like these or put on mycapstonelibrary for them. I can think of a few kids that will probably want to ask the librarian to get these books for the school library. LSSL5385
ReplyDeleteI have a student who was a reluctant reader last year, and is finally diving into graphic novels and reading more fluently than I could have hoped for. Thanks for including these titles in your review!
ReplyDeleteMany of my students are really getting into graphic novels or comics, as they sometimes call them. These two books would be something they would surely enjoy.

ReplyDeleteI have never heard of the Lunch Lady graphic novels. I have heard of the Baby Mouse graphic novels because the students at my elementary are always asking me for them. They really enjoy reading them and so does my daughter. Very cute!
